GM Alternator Modification for Simple on-Trail Welding (note - this does not replace existing alternator on the engine i.e., you need a second alternator installed to do this) Steps: 1. Obtain GM alternator with internal regulator. 2. Disassemble and remove the solid state regulator. 3. Remove the insulation from the bolt farthest away from the external terminals. This will cause the regulator to put out maximum amps when the alternator is switched on. 4. Remove and discard the self-exciter diodes (diode trio). 5. Reassemble the alternator. 6. Install the new welding alternator to your engine. 7. Hook up an on/off switch to the #1 terminal (from the regulator) and a fused battery power. 8.
